Receiving a first Olympic medal is supposed to be a momentous and exhilarating occasion for every athlete but not Alysia Montaño. “A stab in the gut, in the heart, really,” is how she describes her supposed moment of triumph. In the days after learning that she could be awarded a bronze medal, Montaño says that her emotions oscillated from joy to sadness to something akin to grief. Savinova celebrates her winning gold at the London Olympics, a title of which she was later stripped. Montaño being awarded her bronze medal from the 2013 world championships in 2019.

CNN —Victoria Beckham’s birthday party on Saturday got a little spicy. The fashion designer, once known best as Posh Spice, celebrated her 50th birthday this weekend in London at a swanky affair, where she was joined by her former Spice Girls bandmates Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell-Horner, Melanie Brown and Melanie Chisolm. The last time all five members of the Spice Girls performed together was in 2012 at the London Olympics opening ceremony. In 2019, Bunton, Horner, Chisolm and Brown – also known by their nicknames Baby Spice, Ginger Spice, Sporty Spice and Scary Spice, respectively – reunited for a tour, while Beckham opted out, citing her desire to focus on her family and successful company. The British girl group released their debut album “Spice” in 1996, and went on a hiatus in 2000 to pursue solo careers.

It took Lashinda Demus of the United States 52.77 seconds to run the women’s 400-meter hurdles at the 2012 London Olympics. A year after that decision, and 12 years after the race, she is still waiting to receive her gold medal. One of her American teammates, Erik Kynard Jr., competed in the high jump at the London Games. And like Demus, he had to wait many years before being named the victor. Demus and Kynard are expected to finally receive their medals this summer during the Paris Olympics, according to officials at the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee.

CNN —A proposed format change could shake-up the long jump at major track and field competitions, but will the idea take flight? That’s the big question for those involved in athletics right now, notably nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis. The new format, which has been put forward by World Athletics chief executive Jon Ridgeon, could see athletes jump from a take-off zone, rather than a take-off board, essentially doing away with foul jumps. “The long jump is the most difficult event in track and field,” Lewis said in a separate post. Judges inspect the take-off board at the 2012 London Olympics.

The Oscars are enlisting a group of live television veterans to oversee its 96th show in March. Hamilton, meanwhile, has three Academy Award telecasts on his resume already, including the 82nd Oscars hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin and the 86th Oscars hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, in addition to 14 Super Bowl halftime shows and the London Olympics opening. The 96th Oscars are scheduled for Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. “Having worked with Raj, Katy and Hamish on many special and memorable projects over the years, we have full confidence in their vision for the 96th Oscars,” Walt Disney Television executive Rob Mills said. Like many awards shows, the Oscars have suffered decreased ratings in recent years, and not just because of the pandemic editions.

Rapinoe won the Women's World Cup twice, most recently in 2019. She continued to do so for the US national team, a symbol not appreciated by everyone in the country. But, despite all the success that went before, her World Cup dreams ended in a penalty shootout heartbreak. There was to be no perfect ending for Rapinoe as the US was dumped out of the 2023 Women's World Cup last-16. A smile of disbelief masked the pain as she trudged off the pitch, never to play in a World Cup again.

It is here that Ugandan running is now thriving, though the region’s talent took time to develop. While Kenya enjoyed relative stability in the decades after it gained independence in 1963, Uganda was at war for much of the 1970s and 1980s. Lawlessness pervaded the Mount Elgon region until the turn of the century: Bandits from neighboring tribes would sweep in at night and conduct raids on cattle, often killing locals in the process. The resettlement process, Kiptala said, was traumatic, but it also helped unlock running talent. Through school, children could access competitions, and by the early 2000s, athletes from the Elgon region were beginning to appear in World Championship and Olympic finals.

CNN —Victoria Beckham may not have fully “hung up” her microphone after all. The fashion designer and former Spice Girl, also known as “Posh Spice,” serenaded a small room full of cheering friends – including her husband, soccer star David Beckham – with an iconic Spice Girls track, as seen in a video of the impromptu performance that she shared on her TikTok over the weekend. Microphone in hand, Beckham was seen singing the girl group’s hit 1996 track “Say You’ll be There” while dancing with husband David, who was also joyfully singing along to every word. For decades, his carefully honed media persona – part pseudo-intellectual; part loveable-but-out-of-touch-poshboy – won Johnson fans beyond the traditional Conservative base. Johnson attended a Parliament's Privileges Committee hearing, where he gave evidence on whether he deliberately misled parliament over Partygate. Adrian Dennis/AFP/Getty ImagesThat same day, Johnson’s dwindling influence was further underscored as he led a futile rebellion against Sunak’s new Brexit deal, something Johnson has publicly criticized. Johnson delivered Brexit in 2016, but it was now Prime Minister Rishi Sunak who received praise from US President Joe Biden for fixing the issue Johnson's deal created with Northern Ireland. And living in denial might be the kindest thing that Johnson could possibly have done for himself and his legacy.

The conservative blowback came as no surprise to Parker, who told Nike's board of directors to expect some short-term backlash. In late 2014, the BBC sent a film crew to Portland to interview several former Oregon Project employees. "He would be at the side of the track calling out runners' splits but wouldn't call Kara's out," Adam Goucher told me. When people asked why she left the Oregon Project, she said it was a "personal decision." "I don't think it has anything to do with who the CEO is," Goucher told me.

BRUSSELS, Nov 16 (Reuters) - With whistles, words of encouragement and even a fake tattoo, Belgium's King Philippe took charge of the national "Red Devils" soccer team this week in a tongue-in-cheek film designed to get the country behind the side at the World Cup. The short film shows Belgium coach Roberto Martinez arriving at the palace for an audience with the king and viewing items such as slippers and a notebook with tactics to imply the monarch is an avid fan. "I know why you're here," the king says. The king then takes to the training pitch, at one point offering advice to star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne. "Violence against another person" is by far the most common criminal offense reported in U.K. hotels, new data shows. 'Magnets for crime'Brian Moore, operations director at hotel security consultancy Global Secure Accreditation, told CNBC that hotels are "magnets for crime." When asked about the U.K. figures, Moore said, "I think most people would be surprised at the volume of crime since the U.K. is relatively safe. Hotel guests should store valuables in room safes, and exercise caution when using a hotel's Wi-Fi. Hotel guests should also ensure they are connecting to the hotel network and not a similarly named, fake one.
